Le golf est un sport plus démocratisé aux Etats-Unis qu'en Europe par exemple. A New York, nombreuses sont les possibilités de pratiquer sans dépenser des fortunes. Témoignage de Marie Antoinette, golfeuse : "Tout le monde peut jouer dans les golfs publiques, même sans avoir de voiture ni vouloir souscrire à un golf privé (souvent assez couteux). On peut trouver des golfs dans les 5 boroughs et jouer un 9 trous pour environ 25 USD et un 18 trous pour env. 40USD maximum avec la carte de résident.
